Karla de Lara

Karla de Lara (born 1972, Guadalajara, Mexico) is widely regarded as one of Mexico's most internationally celebrated contemporary artists, known as the "Mother of Hyperrealistic Pop Art." She continually seeks to explore uncharted artistic worlds without stylistic boundaries or technical limitations, adapting and readapting her techniques to better express her ideals and the realities of everyday life.

Her signature style — hyperrealistic pop art — draws on exaggerated themes inspired by the entertainment industry and the collective imagination, distorting familiar ideas in a way that flirts with realism without bowing to its limitations. One of her most recognizable hallmarks is her distinctive high-gloss technique, and her deep understanding of light, atmosphere, and architecture.

With over 350 individual exhibitions in more than 38 countries worldwide — including Art Basel and Art Miami — de Lara has built a reputation as a restless, prolific creator whose cityscapes function as magical, soulful reinterpretations of her own immersion in the world.

She has won prestigious prizes in Mexico and abroad, and has been commissioned to paint portraits of prominent figures across music, film, design, and politics. Her international accolades include first prize at the Biennial of the Nations in Venice — chosen from 500 artists across 53 countries — and the Leonardo da Vinci Award presented at the Palazzo Borghese in Florence, making her the first Mexican artist to receive that honor.

Most recently, she was named the official artist of the U.S.–Mexico Bicentennial, creating works that explore the cultural fusion between the two nations.
